Profile:
Con Brio Music Therapy is specialized in Neurologic Music Therapy, working primarily with individuals who have an acquired brain injury or are living with the effects of a neurodegenerative disease. Neurologic Music Therapy is a research and evidenced based practice. Based on music’s influence on the brain, Neurologic Music Therapy uses music to work on non-music, client-specific goals. Rehabilitation goal areas include speech, motor, and cognition. Because of music’s expressive qualities, Music Therapy can also address psychosocial goals such as self-esteem, self-expression, or improve mood. An individual does not need a music background in order to receive Music Therapy.
Dr. Cheryl Jones holds her PhD in Music and Health Sciences from the University of Toronto, where she was also in the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience. She earned her Masters in Music Therapy from Wilfrid Laurier University with a focus on music-centred psychotherapy, and has advanced training in Neurologic Music Therapy from the Bio-medical Research Center at Colorado State University. She is a Fellow of the Robert F. Unkefer Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy and serves on the international advisory council for this academy. Cheryl is also a registered psychotherapist with CRPO. She is a researcher for the Conrad Institute of Music Therapy Research. Cheryl currently maintains a private practice, Con Brio Music Therapy, in Ottawa.
